Stand Speak Rise Up
The non-profit organization Stand Speak Rise Up! aims to denounce the use of rape as a weapon of war, prevent its proliferation, and support victims in their recovery and pursuit of justice. In 2016, H.R.H. Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg met Dr. Denis Mukwege in Luxembourg, who sought her help in supporting two of his foundation’s projects: the creation of a global fund to assist war rape victims and the establishment of an international solidarity network uniting survivors of sexual violence. This meeting deeply moved the Grand Duchess, prompting her to fully commit to implementing these initiatives.
By 2017, she actively participated in the first meeting of the Survivors' Network and helped establish the Global Alliance of Victims and Survivors in 2018, now operating under the name SEMA – the Global Network of Victims and Survivors to End Wartime Sexual Violence. Together with Dr. Denis Mukwege and lawyer Céline Bardet, founder of the NGO We Are NOT Weapons of War, the Grand Duchess developed the Stand Speak Rise Up! forum, held on March 26-27, 2019, in Luxembourg.
This forum, for the first time, brought together over 50 survivors, three Nobel Peace Prize laureates (Dr. Denis Mukwege, Nadia Murad, and Professor Muhammad Yunus), numerous lawyers, researchers, NGO members, and committed figures.
The forum also marked the public launch of the Grand Duchess Maria Teresa of Luxembourg’s Appeal.
The association serves as a "voice" for survivors, providing platforms for their testimonies and offering solutions. It organizes regular meetings focused on specific themes, bringing together survivors and international experts. The goal is to provide factual insights, propose solutions, and influence international institutions to effect change.
Stand Speak Rise Up! calls on national and international organizations, as well as civil society, to rally behind the survivors, support their cause, and strengthen action. Ending the impunity of perpetrators and instigators of sexual violence crimes in conflict zones must become an international priority.
Since its inception, Stand Speak Rise Up! has helped fund over 20 projects initiated by survivors' associations, supporting their recovery, financial independence, and community strengthening.
